Reflections and Background

While in college, I remember hearing about “primal scream” therapy. According to Merriam-Webster’s definition, primal scream therapy is: psychotherapy in which the patient recalls and reenacts a particularly disturbing past experience usually occurring early in life and expresses normally repressed anger or frustration especially through spontaneous and unrestrained screams, hysteria, or violence.

Personal Reflections

After having worked on this mixed media bas-relief painting for over two years, I was able to finish it…within the 2-week period beyond when I learned my Mother had died and when we buried her. Primal Scream, indeed. An ode to all Mothers who did and do their best. Our cries at your passing echo your cries at our birthing.

Notes about the process:

This and other paintings from my Torn Canvas Series represents my transitioning back to my art roots in sculpture. Tearing the canvas (a risk!) and weaving wire around and through it, subsequently wrapping the wire in plaster-coated cloth, I had the satisfaction of creating new trompe l’oeil effects while further challenging my painting skills!
