Here and Gone

ELAINE WEINER-REED

“Here and Gone” - Elaine Weiner-Reed’s Exhibition Statement

I love the physicality of sculpting and painting and I believe the artist’s hand should be evident and recognizable.

Focused on transience and imperfection, much of my work integrates memories of people here and gone. I try to capture fleeting moments and the energy of encounters. An ode to their stories, my scenarios feature individuals within or outside of a group dynamic. At times, my work is in response to current events, an attempt to come to terms with the unspeakable. I am in awe of the resiliency of the human spirit.

My paintings are all created in music (Maynard Ferguson, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Claude Nougaro, Vanessa Collier, Chimène Badi). That rhythm becomes part of their core or substrata. Sometimes, though, sometimes the music becomes the piece itself: Night At The Improv, Harmonics, and Heart and Soul (inspired by Vanessa Collier).

Wakan honors the spirituality and memory of artist and friend, Henry Niese (http://www.henryniese.com). Ancestral Whispers, Talking Story, and Figments of Her Imagination recognize the importance of heritage and storytellers.
